Motorists traveling between Dubai and Sharjah should prepare for temporary overnight traffic disruptions as authorities carry out infrastructure works related to the UAE’s ambitious Etihad Rail project. The closure is part of ongoing efforts to develop the national railway network, which will connect cities and communities across the country and improve long-term transportation options.
The affected route is the single-lane exit from Dubai towards Sharjah on Emirates Road (E611), near the Maliha Street interchange and the Sharjah Mosque area. According to the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, the exit will be closed daily from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM beginning June 13 and continuing through June 22, 2026. During these hours, motorists will need to follow designated diversion routes and temporary traffic management measures.
The closure is necessary to facilitate construction activities associated with Etihad Rail, one of the UAE’s largest infrastructure projects. Once operational, the passenger rail network is expected to connect all seven emirates, offering faster and more sustainable travel between major cities, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. The railway is designed to reduce road congestion, support economic growth, and enhance connectivity across the UAE.
Authorities are advising drivers, particularly those who commute during late-night and early-morning hours, to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time. Alternative routes and traffic diversions will be clearly signposted throughout the closure period to help minimize disruption.
While the temporary inconvenience may affect some travelers, the works represent another important step toward the completion of the UAE’s modern rail network. As Etihad Rail continues to expand, it is expected to transform transportation across the country, offering residents and visitors a faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly way to travel.
