In a significant step toward improving transportation and connectivity between Sharjah and Dubai, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has announced the construction of a new double-lane underground tunnel beneath the Al Taawun area. The ambitious infrastructure project aims to ease congestion on one of the busiest commuter routes linking the two emirates and create a smoother travel experience for residents and visitors alike.
The new tunnel is designed to improve traffic flow along Al Taawun Road, a vital corridor used daily by thousands of motorists traveling between Sharjah and Dubai. As both emirates continue to grow, the need for enhanced road infrastructure has become increasingly important, prompting authorities to invest in long-term transportation solutions that support economic activity, mobility, and quality of life.
To facilitate the tunnel’s construction, the well-known Al Taawun roundabout monument will be temporarily removed. Recognizing the landmark’s cultural and sentimental significance to residents, Sheikh Dr. Sultan reassured the public that the monument will not be lost. Instead, it will be carefully redesigned and reconstructed in exactly the same form before being reinstalled in its original location once the tunnel works are complete.
According to the Sharjah Ruler, extensive engineering studies and underground inspections were conducted before the decision was made. Specialists examined the monument’s deep foundations and determined that dismantling it was necessary to allow the tunnel’s entry and exit roads to pass underneath safely and efficiently.
